These paintings build on the body of works initially exhibited in the solo exhibition ’Sublime State’, at the Lounge Gallery, London. Their initial starting point was a road trip across the South-west U.S.A. Their imagery derives from found internet imagery, and specifically from webcam stills. The works are situated within Edmund Burke’s concept of the Sublime and his description the terror and awe experienced on finding ourselves in a vast wilderness.
As the series progressed the location expanded to other places, and especially to the white spaces of the Antarctic. They continued to be sourced from webcams; there was a fascination in being transported by an unmanned mechanical eye and in real time from my East London studio to distant lands devoid of human presence and unvisited by me except perhaps in dreams. These paintings raise questions about our apprehension of reality. They are also explorations of the relationship between physical space and states of mind and being.
